61162-450 Tracer

The standardizations organization IEC has developed a standard for the use of Ethernet for maritime navigation communications. The work has been done in the technical committee TC80 working group WG6. The standard is formally known as IEC61162-450 but within the group we have referred to it as Lightweight Ethernet (LWE). For further information about LWE please read our Whitepaper published in the December edition of Digital Ship.

We have been active in the development of the this standard for maritime navigation. The standard specifies the use of IP Multicast as the addressing and UDP as the encapsulation. There are 16 transmission groups each using its own multicast address and udp port combination.

We have developed an easy to use tool for tracing the traffic for the different groups. The tool sets up the network stack for reception of IP Multicast  on the relevant groups and records all relevant traffic. The received LWE packets are then parsed to extract talker IDs and sentence IDs. The tool also maintains counters for various statistics and displays the traffic rates.

We expect that manufacturers of LWE equipment and test facilities can benefit from this tool. The cost of this tool is meant to cover only the development time spent on this project. Two pricing options are offered:

Single user - single platform   $400                                           Multi user - multi platform       $800

The source code can be made available - please contact us for price enquiries

The tool is available for the following platforms: Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
